After my dad survived he became a devout Christian. He goes to church at least twice a week. Here he is looking for the passage Palms 23 for me to photograph, the passage that says “The lord is my shepherd”. He asked me to photograph him on the tracks near his house, to communicate this idea of herding. He wanted to photograph the concept of “Staying on the rail.” He always reminds me to stay on course, don’t do anything to seriously skew the course, no unnecessary risks. He always says we(the family) have enough things to manage so stay on the rail. But what is the rail? You can stay on it but you have no clue where it is taking you. For my dad his path took him all over the world as a pilot and quickly grounded him into disease that he narrowly averted. For me there is no rail, the rail is the only thing that is beneath my feet. I try not to think about where I’m headed or where I have been because to me all we have is the present. This moment with my dad, making a beautiful picture, in wonderful light, amongst lush midwest greenery, is a reminder of the rail I was on. A reminder that the rail that I was and still on is living in the present.
